OUR HISTORY
As one of the 8,994 Groups within the United Kingdom, we are based within the Scout District of Terra Nova, which is itself one of eight Districts within the Scout Area of Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan, affectionately referred to as CATVOG. In turn, CATVOG is one of 113 Scout Counties (or Areas) that serve the current interests of a total current membership of half a million young people and Adult supporters. The 1st Pentwyn is justly proud to form part of the largest youth movement in this country. On a world-wide scale, there are impressively more than 28 million members, representing 200 countries.
The 1st Pentwyn Group was officially first registered on 25th October 1977, although it had been running for some time prior to that date. 2002 was therefore our 25th anniversary, and we traced many of our ‘old boys’ - and girls - for a celebration. Our first Group Scout Leader was Paul Baker, with John Kelly as Cub Scout Leader. Mervyn and Mary Jarrett, who set up the Scout Section and are still active Leaders with us, joined the Group shortly thereafter.
Today, the Group has a Beaver Colony for boys and girls whose ages range from 6 to 8 years, a Cub Scout Section for boys and girls between 8 and 10 1/2 years, and a Scout Section for boys and girls between 10 1/2 and 14 years. The members of “Tiger Bay” Venture Scout Unit are now Explorer Scouts within Terra Nova District. In addition to the wide range of adventure activities usually associated with Scouting, we also have a proud record of achievements within the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, through all levels from Bronze to Gold Award.
The year of 2001 saw the introduction of new uniforms for all Sections within the Scout Association. They are based upon the suggestions and opinions of Scouts of all ages throughout the United Kingdom.
The year 2002 heralded an even bigger change, with a totally new training programme for all age ranges becoming effective from 1st September. Two new sections evolved--the Explorer Scouts for young people aged 14 to 18 years, and the Scout Network for those aged 18 to 25 years. The full implementation of the new programme will be completed by December 2003. The coming period will therefore be an exciting time for all members as we take on board these new challenges.
Membership is open to boys and girls, men and women, of all faiths and is bound by its Policy of Equal Opportunities and Child Protection Policy. We would welcome you to join us either as a young member, or as an Adult Leader or Helper working to provide the fun and challenges that the young people of our communities look for.
As an Adult Leader you will work with a Leadership Team, and we will provide you with all the support and Training required. If, however, you are unable to devote the time as a Leader, the Group is constantly looking for occasional Helpers who may have particular skills in the wide variety of subjects the young people undertake. Or, you may wish to work as a member of the background team who help to raise funds and generally provide administrative support to the Leaders.
So, whether you're 6 or 60+, come and join with the Scout Group that is helping to make Pentwyn and the ever growing Pontprennau a better area to live in! Contact us now via the link below and make a difference to a life.
